The Pickle Barrel House is a two-story motel built to resemble two barrels. The house design is based on drawing characters that were 2 inches (five.1 cm) tall[2] [3] and lived under a rose bush in a pickle butt.[4] Information technology is currently located in Grand Marais on Michigan'due south Upper Peninsula near the southern shore of Lake Superior.[5] It is most the intersection of Freeway Grand-77 and County Highway H-58 in this gateway town to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.[5] The main part is a 16-human foot-tall (4.9 m) barrel and has two stories. The primary floor is for the living expanse, and the upstairs is a bedroom.[5] A smaller barrel serves as the kitchen, and the ii barrels are connected by a pantry.[4] [6] There is an outdoor garden and also a seating expanse with a garden path between these two.[4]

Early [edit]
William Donahey was an writer, illustrator, and cartoonist. He created the Teenie Weenies cartoon feature,[6] [vii] which was a widely syndicated comic that debuted in the Chicago Tribune in 1914. The comic characteristic connected until his decease in 1970. It featured tiny people who lived in a world of life-sized objects. To these tiny people the real world objects were gargantuan.[8]
Donahey did several advertisements for Reid-Murdock & Company for the Monarch Foods line.[viii] Teenie Weenies were on many of the labels of Monarch food products including coffee, peanut butter, popcorn, sausage, bacon, and all kinds of vegetables, including pickles. One advertising featured a pocket-sized pickle keg that was used equally a house past some of his Teenie Weenies children characters.[4]
1 day in 1926 as a surprise for his wife Mary Dickerson Donahey, herself an author, Donahue, along with Reid-Murdock, had a duplicate large version of the keg house built that they could really utilize. Reid-Murdock ordered the Pickle Barrel Business firm to exist built by the Pioneer Cooperage Company of Chicago. This special cottage would then be for the Donaheys to use as a summertime cabin in the woods at Grand Sable Lake to inspire their writings.[5] [half-dozen] The barrel house was a large-scale version of the miniature oak casks that held the Monarch-brand pickles.[8] The Donaheys received much attending for their "barrel business firm on the lake" since nobody had ever seen anything similar this before. The Pickle Butt house was moved to downtown Thousand Marais in 1936 from the forest at nearby Grand Sable Lake when new tenants took possession.[vi] [vii] Through the years it was an ice-cream stand, an data kiosk booth, and a souvenir gift store. The barrel firm museum has sometime pictures of the Donaheys in their one-of-a-kind pickle butt cottage. Some of these old photos of the 1920s even show the "curiosity visitors" at their cottage in the wood. In the museum too are several books and other materials on William Donahey and his children'due south Teenie Weenies. One room lone showcases William Donahey and his artwork of creations of the Teenie Weenies. In this room is a 7-inch (18 cm) barrel on brandish showing a promotion for Monarch sweet pickles.[4] The barrel firm pretty much recreates its appearance and temper when the Donaheys lived at that place.
